First fish export for Samarai-Murua District arrives safely in Thailand
The Samarai Murua District has successful exported its first shipment of fish to the Thailand market, signaling a major breakthrough in district-led economic development and fisheries commercialization.
The export was officially launched last December by Prime Minster, James Marape, who expressed immense pride and satisfaction in the achievement.
The first shipment comprised four fully loaded 20-foot containers of fish, about the weight of 101,766kg at the value in USD134,885.82 which successfully arrived in Thailand over the weekend, marking Samarai Murua District’s entry into the international seafood market.
The fish was facilitated through the district-owned company Kekeisi Investment Limited, which has been instrumental in coordinating production, processing and logistics.
PM Marape commended the Samarai Murua District leadership, particularly, MP Isi Henry Leonard, for his tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to turning local economic potential into tangible results.
The PM noted that the export reflects the government’s vision of empowering rural communities in the districts to actively participate in downstream processing, value addition and export driven growth.
MP Leonard acknowledged the support of the Prime Minister, district stakeholders and local fishermen, stating that this achievement belongs to the people of Samarai Murua.
He emphasized that the initiative would create sustainable livelihoods, generate revenue for the district, and open doors for future export opportunities.
Leonard also thanked the National Fisheries Authority for working closely with his office in providing the necessary documents and licensing to fish and export the catch to international markets.
The historic export stands as proud moment for Samarai Murua District and a strong signal of Papua New Guinea’s growing presence in global fisheries trade.
