PNG affirms strong bilateral ties following U.S visa policy update

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Justin Tkatchenko, has reaffirmed that diplomatic relations between Papua New Guinea and the United States remain at an "all-time high" following the U.S. Government's announcement of an indefinite pause on immigrant visas for 75 nations.

Minister Tkatchenko confirmed that Papua New Guinea is not included on the restricted list.

He noted that PNG's exclusion is a testament to the maturity, sincerity, and mutual trust that define the current state of the bilateral partnership.

"The fact that Papua New Guinea remains exempt from this pause on immigration processing underscores the strength of our standing with the United States," Minister Tkatchenko stated.

"It reflects a relationship built on transparency and shared interests as we move further into 2026."

While PNG is not directly affected, the Minister acknowledged the broader strategic implications of the policy, noting that the tightening of U.S. borders signals a shift in the global migration landscape.

He emphasized that PNG remains vigilant in ensuring its foreign policy aspirations and diplomatic pursuits continue to align with these evolving international realities.

"Our objective is to continue adding value to the PNG-US relationship across all sectors, including commerce, security, and government relations," the Minister added.

"We are grateful that the U.S. Government maintains a positive outlook on our people, ensuring that official, educational, and cultural exchanges remain uninterrupted."

Minister Tkatchenko concluded by stating that the Department of Foreign Affairs will continue to prioritize programs that build momentum and fortify the friendship between the two nations throughout 2026 and beyond.
