The National Department of Health [NDoH] is monitoring a rise in respiratory flu cases across Papua New Guinea.

Tests carried out at the Goroka Laboratory by the PNG Institute of Medical Research have confirmed the circulating strain as Influenza A [H3N2].

Health Secretary Mr Pascoe Kase says the virus is seasonal and similar to previous flu waves, but it is currently spreading in many parts of the world and can cause severe illness in some people.

He reassured the public that there is not enough evidence at this stage to declare an official outbreak, but urged citizens to remain alert and take preventive measures seriously.

Mr Kase says people with lower immunity to this strain face a higher risk of severe symptoms.

Those most at risk include people aged 50 years and above, children under five, pregnant women, and individuals living with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, HIV, tuberculosis, or cancer.

The Health Department is advising the public to follow simple hygiene and safety measures to reduce the spread of the virus. People with flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, or runny nose are encouraged to stay home and avoid work, school, and large gatherings.

Health officials also recommend regular handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, improving ventilation by opening windows and doors, and wearing a face mask when going out while unwell.

The NDoH says it will continue to closely monitor flu cases nationwide and provide further updates as more information becomes available.
