Ben Hetra Memorial Cup 9s Tournament
Hela Province successfully concluded the Ben Hetra Memorial Cup 9s Tournament in grand fashion last week at the Wigmen Stadium in Tari that started on January 15 to 18.
The competition brought together 24 teams from across the Highlands Provinces, the teams are ADF Tarangau, Post PNG Ninja, Macovs Eastern Star, Nipa Pride, JP Hulia Cowboys, Tebi Souths, Tari, Central, Karinz Central Tigers, Koroba Nokoni’s Mula Pride, TNT JT Brothers, Giluwe Tigers, Strickland Raiders, Warakum Bulls, Tukujawini R16 Rangers, All Blacks, Murubu United, Zero City United, Huli Aroni’s. Magarima United, Mendi Central, Kendall Tarangau, Urban Saints and Inaka Wah Wa.
Emerging as the overall champions, Macovs Eastern Star claimed the prestigious title and walked away with K25, 000 cash prize. Their victory was hard-fought and celebrated by fans and players alike. The runner-up, TNT JT Brother, also delivered an impressive performance throughout the tournament and was awarded K15, 000.
In the Plate division, the Warakum Bulls secured the top honor, earning K15, 000, while Mendi Central, the Plate runner-up, received K10, 000. The Bowl competition saw Tari Central crowned as winners, taking home K10, 000, with Murumbu United finishing as Bowl runner-up and collecting K5, 000. Meanwhile, Kendall Tarangau, who exited the tournament after a loss to Tari Central in the Bowl Qualifying Finals, received a consolation prize of K2, 000.
Ben Hetra Memorial Cup Director Joseph Kaupa says though it was first of its kind for the tournament to be hosted at the new grandstand, the fans, supporters and the community gave the best behavior and respect.
“The 24 teams showed true sportsmanship, humbleness and respect, I appreciate and acknowledge all the team that participated in the tournament. The event was made possible through the generous support of major sponsors and I humbly acknowledge their time and resources put into this event,” Mr. Kaupa stated.
The sponsors are Ipwenz Construction, Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited, the National Gaming Control Board, and the Hela Provincial Government. Additional contributions came from minor sponsors such as the Mineral Resources Development Company, Gravity Engineering Ltd, Macovs Engineering Ltd, and Kemele Construction Ltd.
With its strong turnout, competitive matches, and vibrant atmosphere, the 2026 Ben Hetra Memorial Cup 9s Tournament has set a high standard for future events and reaffirmed the growing passion for rugby league in Hela Province.
