Hiritano super 9s: ‘launchpad for young rugby talent’
A total of 30 teams will compete for a K20,000 prize pool at the Hiritano Super Rugby League Nines, set to take place this weekend in Bereina, Kairuku, Central Province.
The Hiritano Super Nines has become a launchpad for young rugby players along the Hiritano Highway, offering them opportunities to showcase their skills and progress to larger competitions in Port Moresby.
The five-day tournament kicks off on Friday, December 12, 2025, and will culminate with the grand finals on Sunday, December 15, 2025. Teams will compete across the Cup, Plate, and Bowl fixtures, with the prize money distributed among the winners.
According to tournament president Rolf Maino, the initiative was designed to promote youth development, foster community unity, and identify raw talent.
"The tournament was created to give youths along the Hiritano Highway a platform to grow, develop their skills, and pursue opportunities in bigger competitions," Maino said.
The program has already produced success stories. Bartholomew Evi, a graduate of the Hiritano Nines, earned the Rookie of the Year award in 2024 while playing for the Central Dabaris, illustrating the tournament’s potential to shape future rugby stars.
The Hiritano Super 9s was originally founded by Don Pio, now manager of the Dabaris team, and continues to expand its influence on youth rugby development. The tournament is managed by a 10-person committee, with Maino as president, Clement Pio Avaisa on the committee, and Paul Aluofo serving as tournament director. Aluofo also brings expertise from his role as Kairuku District Administration Sports Coordinator based in Bereina.
With its focus on talent identification, skill development, and community engagement, the Hiritano Super Rugby League Nines is cementing its reputation as a key stepping stone for aspiring rugby league players in Central Province.
