Lae Police, under the Metropolitan Command, in partnership with Digicel, Vodafone, Telikom PNG mobile networks, and NICTA, has successfully launched its new Emergency Number, 112.

Though new, this is an additional emergency number to the already existing toll free number, 70903300, specifically designed to open more phone lines for calls from residents of Lae to get through when they need police help.

Speaking at the launching, the Assistant Commissioner of Police for Northern Command, Peter Guinness said, 112 is not just a number, it is a lifeline for emergency situations.

"112 is one aspect of communication, without communication we will have serious problems when we put out operation notices," Guinness said.

ACP Guinness went on to mention that the emergency 112 line is open for everyone in the city, including rural parts of Morobe province, to use, whether to seek assistance for a Law and Order issue, health or other issues (NBC News)

As the Guest of honor at this launching, the Deputy Prime Minister and Member for Lae John Rosso highlighted, that the 112 emergency number is very important, but it can only be achieved if all stakeholders work hand in hand.

"Nothing works without consistant funding and good leadership from the police force and other agencies."

"Lae continues to lead especially in policing, it always sets an example for everyone else to follow," the Lae MP said.

Rosso proceeded to commend the Lae Police for their distinct policing efforts in keeping Lae City safe for everyone, before officially launching the new emergency number, 112.
