The PNG senior women's football team, PNG Gold, have claimed the inaugural title of the MSG Prime Ministers Football Cup today after beating Fiji 3 goals to nil in wet weather conditions at the Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby.

After a tight contest in most parts of the first half, the home side began putting pressure on the Fijians and they finally found themselves in front when Marie Kaipu slotted in a penalty which sent them into the sheds leading 1-nil.

The penalty came when Fijian defender Filomena Racea brought down Grace Batiy just inches inside the Fijian 18-yard box.

Coming into the second half, the PNG ladies maintain their confidence and finished off scoring two more goals to secure a historical victory and become the pioneer champions of the women's MSG Prime Ministers Football Cup.

PNG's coach Erickson Komeng said it was exciting to finish off with a win which puts the team in a good shape in the lead up to the Women's World Cup Qualifiers.

"We have a World Cup Qualifiers coming up so after this we rest for a few weeks and then we start preparing again for the World Cup Qualifiers," Komeng said.

He also added that it is well deserving for the team who sacrificed a lot to play for their country on home soil.

"Most of these ladies sacrificed their family time, leaving behind their children and families to come and play for their country so massive credit to them," he added.
