Gurney Airport runway fully reopens after major upgrade
Travelers in and out of Gurney Airport will be pleased to know the entire 1,960-meter runway has been recommissioned for use.
Major asphalting works under the K76.8million ABD-funded Gurney Airport Upgrade Project have seen flight disruptions, downgrades, and cancellations much of the year because of the section by section work.
The National Airports Corporation who issued a Stop Press notice this Saturday for the go ahead says the asphalting was important work that adds at least 15-20years lifespans to the runway, effectively cutting down maintenance needs.
The last of 240 meters towards runway 27 was completed end of October and finally inspected and commissioned for full use by the Civil Aviation Authority
Airside works still underway include installation of Airfield Ground Lighting systems, to help with visibility in bad weather and allow for night flights too, this work expected to be completed before end of the year.
The entire project, which also includes a new Gurney Airport Terminal, is said to be at the 50 percent mark, and delivery is set for 2026.
