The Somare Cup, a rugby competition that embodies the values of unity and discipline, is set to return to Rigo District, more than two decades after it was last held.

Vera Raga, President of the Walk the Talk Association Inc and a major sponsor of the Rigo Schools Rugby League and Gomore Rugby League, said the tournament is more than just a game.

“It’s a legacy of friendship, unity, and discipline, inspired by the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare,” Raga said.

The initiative was established in the late 80's in East Sepik and was later introduced to Rigo, Central in 1987. Created out of close family friendship between Veratau and the late grand chief, the maiden Somare Cup tournament in Kwikila station was organized by Raga’s late uncle and senior Statesman Henry Veratau, alongside former Auditor General Sir Makena Geno and Morea Veratau.

The competition featured four groups: Sana, Soma, Aiyo, and Seida, and was well-known in Wewak.

“This was the first time the Somare Cup was held outside East Sepik,” Raga said of the initial game played in Rigo two decades ago. “Most games in Rigo were played in Kwikila because of the facilities. We were in high school and privileged to participate in the Cup.”

Raga said the revival of the Somare Cup in Saroa Village will help reconnect communities through sport, discipline, and the enduring values promoted by the late Grand Chief.
