East Sepik Governor Allan Bird has assured parents and guardians that arrangements are underway to safely repatriate East Sepik students studying at the University of Goroka [UOG], following violent clashes between students and locals on Sunday.

Governor Bird confirmed on that his administration is working closely with East Sepik student leaders at UOG and the provincial government to coordinate their return.

“Please organize yourselves and someone from the Administration will be in contact with your leaders later today about how best we can bring you home,” Bird said in a social media post. “A meeting is being held today, and among other matters, your situation will be discussed.”

He urged all Sepik students to refrain from engaging in further violence and to comply with directions from local authorities.

The Governor also appealed for calm and understanding from the local communities in Goroka, acknowledging the challenges faced by both sides.

"To the good people of Goroka, I understand your frustration. Our students from all over the country are also struggling to find a future in very difficult circumstances. Many of our students come from struggling families, just like you," he said.

Bird commended the police and security personnel for their swift intervention and expressed hope for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing situation.
