Fresh off a historic NRL Premiership win with the Brisbane Broncos, Brendan Piakura is set to pull on the Cook Islands jersey once again in an emotional return to international rugby.

The young forward, who hasn't featured for the national team since the last Rugby League World Cup, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to represent his heritage in the 2025 Pacific Championship series.

“I’m very lucky to be putting on the Cook Islands jumper again this year,” Piakura said. “Unfortunately I haven’t played the last couple of years, but I’m super grateful and excited to finally put it on again.”

Cook Islands will open their Pacific Championship campaign against Fiji this weekend at the Santos National Football Stadium with the Broncos premiership winning forward set to lead upfront.

Piakuru, who made his first trip to Papua New Guinea with the Aitus ahead of Saturday’s match, is soaking up the experience.

“Yeah, first time in PNG. The weather’s nice – it’s nice and hot. Hopefully it’s not too hot on Sunday,” he joked.

Having recently celebrated Brisbane’s first Premiership in 19 years after defeating Melbourne Storm 26-22, Piakura said the team’s success was still sinking in, but he’s quickly turned his focus to international duties.

“Every team goes out to win as many games as possible and obviously the last game – the grand final. I’m super lucky and grateful I got the opportunity to play in one, let alone win it,” he said.

The reaction from the Brisbane community, he said, has been overwhelming.

“You don’t just play for your teammates, you represent the whole city. We’re just really happy we could bring the trophy home to Brisbane.”

Born to Cook Islands parents, both with deep ancestral roots, Piakura says his selection carries extra significance.

“There’s a lot of history, love, and connection there. It really runs through my blood,” he said.

His father, a former Cook Islands international himself, is especially proud to see his son wear the same jersey.

“Yeah, definitely. I think especially for the old man, he played for the Cook Islands as well, so they’re definitely proud.”

Following the Pacific Championships, the team will return to the Cook Islands for a cultural and team-building camp, something Piakura is eagerly anticipating.

“It’ll be a great chance for the boys especially those who haven’t been there before to reconnect with our roots. It’ll be a really special camp.”

Meanwhile, the Cook Islands face a crucial Rugby League World Cup qualifier against South Africa at Kombeck Stadium on November 9. Piakura says the goal is clear: qualification is a must.

The team is also expected to be bolstered by big names, with Murata Niukore, Kayal Iro, and possibly Valentine Holmes in line for selection if they qualify.

“It feels like the boys are really putting their hands up to play for the Cook Islands,” Piakura said. “We’ve got a lot of talent out there, and as they come back, it just makes us stronger. We can really be a team to compete hard against the others.”

As the Cook Islands prepare for a busy few weeks on and off the field, Piakura’s presence offers both power and pride as a player representing not only his team but an entire culture.
