The name of the PNG NRL team for 2028 is expected to be announced soon, according to Prime Minister James Marape.

The Prime Minister said this right after he arrived from Canberra on Monday night.

It is understood that he met with NRL Chief Executive Officer Andrew Abdo and Australian Rugby League Chairman Peter V'landys during his time in Australia.

"The PNG NRL board will be meeting this week, and if all goes to plan, they will be announcing the team's name," Prime Minister James Marape said.

"The board operates independently, so when they're ready, they will make the announcements."

Marape also mentioned that Digicel have informed him that the numbers of participants in the "Name Your Team" is massive, and the board will release information once all facts are confirmed.

The "Name Your Team" online competition was launched on the 8th of August this year, with a website link shared on various social media and online platforms.

The competition provided the opportunity for Papua New Guineans in the country and around the world to nominate a suitable name for the PNG NRL team.

It is understood that if several names are common, the competition will enter into a final phase, which will still involve the public to participate.

The Prime Minister also mentioned that after the name is confirmed and announced, the board will then make further announcements in relation to the coach of the team, players, junior pathways, facilities and membership drives.
