A rugby league tournament has kicked off at Nomad Station in the Middle Fly District as part of the continued Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations.

The three-day event brings together seven teams from across Middle Fly, including Fly Panda, Strickland Roosters, Nomad Warriors, United Brothers, Debe Dragons, Mountain Eagles, and Lake Python. Teams have travelled in from Bedamuni, Fly Zibo, Pa’a, and Lake Murray LLGs to compete and showcase their sporting talent.

Middle Fly MP Maso Hewabi, who is backing the sports event, officially launched the competition, set to showcase the importance of sports in promoting unity and steering young people away from destructive habits.

“I encourage our youths to stay away from drugs and homebrew and focus on sports. Through discipline and commitment, you can become good leaders in your communities,” Hewabi said.

Players were urged to display discipline and good sportsmanship, representing their communities, district, and province with pride.

Outstanding players from the Maso Cup will be considered for selection in the upcoming provincial rugby tournament in Kiunga later this year.

The tournament not only celebrates Independence but also showcases the role of sports in driving social development and youth empowerment in Western Province.
