Turi confirms two deaths after Independence period

Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police, NCD/Central Command, Benjamin Turi, has confirmed that two deaths were reported following the conclusion of Independence celebrations yesterday.
He said one incident occurred in a Port Moresby settlement, while the other was reported this morning in Veifa, Kairuku, Central Province.
In the Central case, police identified the suspect as George Alphonse, who is still at large. Alphonse allegedly attacked the victim with a homemade knife-spear in a betelnut plantation, striking him on the thighs before fleeing the scene. Police believe the killing was linked to a land dispute.
Meanwhile, ACP Turi commended police for their quick response in preventing potential disturbances in the nation’s capital during the Golden Jubilee celebrations.
“They searched and found one person with a homemade gun. The SSD unit and our mobile squad apprehended him and handed him over to Gerehu Police. I saw the weapon myself in one of the police vehicles,” Turi said.
He added that officers also confiscated several knives and other weapons from individuals attempting to cause trouble.
“You could see police officers everywhere around the city, from the suburbs to all the stations. Everyone played their part to keep the city safe,” Turi said.
