The future of Papua New Guinea took center stage yesterday in Aitape Lumi, where children dressed in colorful cultural attire stole hearts during a baby-show, which was the highlight of the district’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations.

Parents proudly carried their little ones, each outfit telling a story of heritage and tradition, drawing cheers from the crowd. Alongside the baby show, a traditional beauty contest, cultural dances, and games showcased the pride and resilience of Aitape Lumi’s people in West Sepik.

Aitape Urban Manager Canisius Saweni praised the community for celebrating peacefully and responsibly, saying, “These children remind us why we celebrate because they are the future leaders of this nation.”

Locals told NBC News this was the first time in 50 years that Aitape Lumi and its sister districts had come together on such a scale. As fireworks prepared to close the day, many say the Golden Jubilee has reminded them that PNG’s unity is built on its people both young and old.

For Aitape Lumi, yesterday’s proud declaration rang clear: “We are one people, one country, one PNG.”
