Southern Highlands Governor William Powi has urged his people to reset their mindset and work together for progress as Papua New Guinea enters its next 50 years of independence.

Speaking on the eve of the nation’s Golden Jubilee, Governor Powi said real development can only happen if people change old ways of thinking, foster unity, and support their mandated leaders while upholding the constitution crafted by the country’s forefathers.

“We must now make efforts to change this bad reputation. It’s only us that will make this happen,” Powi said, referring to the province’s long-standing label as a hotspot in the Highlands.

The Governor made the remarks while commissioning a K10 million bridge at Mendimanda and announcing the extension of Mendi Township, including plans for a new Southern Highlands Provincial Hospital.

The hospital, part of the Marape-Rosso Government’s national commitment to build new hospitals, will be constructed at Mendimanda. A cheque worth K13 million was also presented to local landowners to pave the way for work on the hospital and new public servants’ housing.

Powi said the redevelopment of Mendi Town would give the valley a fresh look and restore pride in the provincial capital.

"Let’s reset our minds and do things differently. This is for our children and the children yet to come. We will build key infrastructure, and every individual has a responsibility to use and take ownership of these services,” Powi said.

Governor Powi reaffirmed his government’s commitment to investing in infrastructure and essential services as the foundation for long-term prosperity in the Southern Highlands.
