PNG mourns ‘Firebrand’ Governor Luther Wenge on eve of 50th Anniversary

Papua New Guinea is in mourning following the death of Morobe Governor, the Honourable Luther Wenge, who Prime Minister James Marape has described as a "firebrand leader."
In a heartfelt media release, Prime Minister Marape described Governor Wenge as a leader who held wide popularity among his people, particularly in the rural areas of Morobe Province.
"In Parliament, he was always vocal, participating in all areas of parliamentary business with reason, conviction and deep concern for his people," Mr. Marape stated.
He noted that the late Governor effectively used his extensive knowledge of law in debates, often infusing his arguments with a unique and personal style of humour.
The Prime Minister also highlighted Governor Wenge's steadfast political loyalty. Within their Pangu Pati.
"Governor Wenge remained strong in the face of political uncertainty and gave me and the party his unwavering support."
Marape said the death comes at an exciting time for the nation, just two days before it is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary of Independence.
"I am deeply saddened that he will not be with us as we celebrate our 50th anniversary of Independence in two days' time," the Prime Minister added.
According to the Prime Minister, he visited the late Governor at the hospital on the morning of his passing yesterday.
The family has been officially informed, and the Government will now work on a program for his funeral and repatriation.
On behalf of his family, the people of Tari-Pori, the Pangu Pati, and the coalition government, Mr. Marape extended his "heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the late Governor Wenge’s family, relatives, and the people of Morobe Province on his untimely passing."
