The countdown is over. The Somare Cup 2025 officially kicks off today in Wewak, marking a vibrant start to one of the region’s most anticipated sporting events and a centerpiece of the PNG 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations.

A record 58 teams from East Sepik, Madang and Morobe Provinces have registered to compete in this year’s tournament, reflecting the growing popularity and prestige of the Somare Cup as a unifying force for youth, sportsmanship, and regional pride.

Defending champions Wewak Eels return with high expectations, aiming to retain their title against a fierce field of challengers. Their victory in last year’s tournament has set the benchmark, and all eyes will be on their opening match as they seek to defend their crown.

The event is proudly sponsored by Wewak MP Stanley Samban, whose support has elevated the tournament’s scale and visibility. Mr Samban's backing underscores a broader commitment to youth development, community engagement, and the celebration of Sepik identity through sport.

At stake is a grand prize of K15,000, with additional cash awards for runners-up and consolation prizes for standout performances. The competition runs from September 12th to 17th, with matches scheduled across multiple venues in Wewak town.

During the official kick-off, Mr Samban says the Somare Shield is more a sporting challenge.

"The Somare Shield is a shield of unity, discipline, excellence, and respect. It reminds us of the values the Grand Chief stood for; peace, dialogue, wisdom, humility, and service for others," said Mr Samban.

In the meantime, Association Pressident Judy Kumasi of Wewak Football Association encourages all clubs to participate in this tournament to affiliate with PNGFA to create pathways for their talents to be exposed at higher levels of football.
