Police in Border Command to act swiftly against illegal activities throughout Independence week

In a firm message to those contemplating disruption during the 50th Independence Anniversary festivities, Assistant Commissioner of Police [Border Command], Commander Steven Francis, has issued a stern warning.
Overseeing Border Command including East and West Sepik, and North and South Fly A/C Commissioner Francis emphasized that police will be vigilant and ready to act swiftly against anyone involved in illegal activities, particularly drunken behavior, homebrew or paia wara consumption, and other forms of disorder during the national celebrations.
“Those who plan to spoil the celebrations especially irresponsible individuals and drunkards must cease. If you do not stop, you will spend our golden jubilee behind bars,” Commander Francis said.
Commander Francis specifically appealed to men to show respect to women, girls, children, and families during the festivities.
“This celebration is for everyone, and men must take the lead in ensuring safety and respect for our mothers, sisters, and daughters,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of maintaining a joyful and safe environment, Francis encouraged citizens to celebrate with good intention and unity.
He underscored the main risks, particularly from opportunists and intoxicated individuals, but reassured the public that robust security measures, including foot and motorized patrols, crowd control, and vehicle checkpoints, will be in place at key event venues.
Commander Francis also acknowledged the valuable support from the PNG Defence Force and Correctional Services:
“We are fortunate to have their presence, especially given our border location. Their collaboration helps police both prevent and manage illegal behavior.
“True independence is not just political it is economic.
“As individuals, families, communities, and as a nation, change begins now.
“Let us honor our legacy by doing the right things for the common good not for self-interest. Happy 50th Independence Anniversary and may God bless Papua New Guinea,” he said.
