Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands have signed the updated border agreements to strengthen cooperation and make travel across the border easier to manage.

Prime Minister James Marape said the two countries share deep family and cultural ties, and the new arrangements will make it easier to monitor movement across the border.

“I think the next phase for ten years, we'll be signing a book so that people on both sides, the two governments, could easily know who's travelling back and forth to manage the special areas,” Mr Marape said.

He said this reflects the close ties between the two countries.

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele described the signing as a “historic milestone.”

“The signing of the border frameworks reflects our commitment to building a resilient future rooted in cooperation, common understanding, mutual respect, and mutual prosperity,” Mr Manele said.

The agreements will also maintain traditional rights for the border communities, including movement, trade, and cultural exchange, while keeping the country safe and peaceful.

Mr Manele said the signing comes at the right time, as Papua New Guinea prepares to celebrate 50 years of independence next week.
