PIF officially opened

The 54th Pacific Island Forum meeting was officially opened, Monday evening, where leaders were treated to stunning traditional performances by the people of Solomon Islands.

Held at their national stadium, which was fully packed - hundreds gathered to witness the opening of the 54th Pacific Islands leaders summit.

The Solomon Islands takes over chairmanship of the PIF and is hosting this annual important meet, after 30 years.

Foods, pigs and traditional money were presented to the leaders, in true pacific style.

Outgoing PIF Chair Tongan Prime Minister Aisake Eke says the 54th PIF theme of “Iumi tugeda nau: Act now for an integrated blue pacific” is both fitting and timely.

He told leaders, the climate emergency crisis remains a top agenda for the region and adding while partnerships are, they must be vigilant.

Incoming PIF Chair and Solomon Islands President Jeremiah Manele says the highlight of the leaders meeting will be the culmination and endorsement of two key regional initiatives that will reaffirm the leadership of our region globally.

PIF Secretary General Baron Waga urged the pacific islands forum family to hold fast to to their commitment to the region.

PNG Prime Minister James Marape was present to witness the opening.
