The Papua New Guinea Solomon Islands Community Association in Honiara has, for the first time, hosted a pre-independence celebration ahead of PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary on September 16.
Association chairman Jorddy Tununto said the event would feature an “independence runway,” where children of mixed PNG and Solomon Islands heritage would dress in traditional costumes. Some wore combinations of both PNG and Solomon Islands attire, highlighting the shared cultures of the two nations.
Groups from Central Province, Eastern Highlands, and the New Guinea Islands and Momase all took part in the event.
The chairman explained that the PNG community in Solomon Islands is made up of about 3,000 people, including families who settled there even before PNG and Solomon Islands gained independence.

He said the community normally holds independence celebrations every year, but this year’s cultural runway was the first of its kind.
“It’s very important, especially for the families who have been here for many years. Some have even become Solomon Islands citizens, but their blood is Papua New Guinean. They are always proud and look forward to September 16,” he said.

On behalf of the community, he also sent well wishes to families and friends in PNG.
“We want to wish our Wantoks back home a happy 50th Independence Anniversary. We also send greetings to Papua New Guineans living in other provinces of Solomon Islands. I’m sure they will celebrate in their own way.”
The official independence program in Solomon Islands will be held on September 16.
