The Santos National Football Stadium was alive with energy and anticipation as the SWG Valley Hunters and the Kramer Apec Brothers faced off in the 2025 Capital Rugby Union premier grade grand final.
In a thrilling encounter that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the Hunters emerged victorious 15-10, claiming their second consecutive championship and solidifying their reputation as a powerhouse in PNG rugby.
From the opening whistle, the Hunters demonstrated their intent. With precise passing, aggressive tackling, and a well-drilled offense, they surged ahead to take a 7-0 lead by halftime. The Apec Brothers, seasoned veterans known for their resilience, struggled to break through the Hunters’ disciplined defense.
The second half was a tense battle. The Hunters extended their lead with a crucial three-point penalty kick, and winger Ismael Sabatha’s late try put the result beyond doubt. The Apec Brothers fought valiantly, scoring a converted try and another penalty, but it wasn’t enough to overturn the deficit. The stadium erupted as the final whistle confirmed the Hunters’ triumph.
Coach Frank Genia, earlier during the week reflected on the team’s 2025 season, saying last year’s grand final victory set the tone for their surge into big dance.
Genia said the team’s triumph goes beyond talent and tactics, commending it’s the bond, mutual respect, and care they have for each other, which led to their success.
For the Apec Brothers, this grand final marked their ninth consecutive appearance, showcasing remarkable consistency, even if victory eluded them this year.
The Valley Hunters now celebrate not only their back-to-back titles but also the spirit of teamwork, determination, and passion that brought them to the top. Fans departed the stadium buzzing with excitement, already anticipating what this formidable team will achieve in the seasons to come.
