Ponowi Primary School in the Ialibu-Pangia District came alive this week with vibrant cultural celebrations as students, teachers, and the surrounding community prepares for Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary on September 16.

The school grounds echoed with the beat of kundu drums, traditional songs, and children’s laughter as the community joined hands to honor this milestone. The day’s program featured cultural performances, poetry, student-led dramas, traditional fire-making, rope-pulling, and creative dances that highlighted both unity and the rich diversity of the nation.

Elders took the opportunity to share stories of resilience and sacrifice, passing on valuable lessons of the nation’s journey to the younger generation. The event drew applause from surrounding communities, who commended the school’s administration and board for their leadership in strengthening education and cultural pride.

The celebration reflected the strong bond between Ponowi Primary School and its community, setting a meaningful tone as the nation prepares to mark half a century of independence.
