The Goroka Secondary School in Eastern Highlands Province hosted a mini pre-Independence celebration to mark the 50th Anniversary of Papua New Guinea.

The program began with students re-enacting the events of September 15, 1975, when the Australian flag was lowered and the PNG flag was raised, commemorating what happened at the independence hill in Waigani, Port Moresby, on Sept 16, 1975.

After the drama, there were displays of traditional songs and dances from different regions by the students

The celebration also saw poem recitation and choir by few Grade 12 students.

Deputy School Principal Sefe Utte says despite not having witnessed the original historic moment, the students were proud to be part of the successful commemoration, which will become a memorable part of their school history.

The deputy School Principal says the purpose of the celebration was to mark the 50th Anniversary of the country and to inform the students of what actually happened on Sept 16,1975.

"The students reflect on the founding fathers who put in the effort to bring PNG to where it is today ", he said.

"The celebration served as a tribute to the nation's history and a reflection on its journey to independence", Mr Utte said.
