Friday, 5 September 2025, 12:05 pm

Alotau's weeklong 50th Independence celebrations will for the first time, feature SPOGOMI.

Spogomi is a game invented in Japan in 2008 by Kenichi Mamitsuka under the slogan “Trash pickup as a sport!” to make garbage collection more engaging and to raise awareness about waste.
Its now taken the world over as a sport.

The name is simple – combining the English word “sport” with “gomi”, the Japanese word for garbage.

JICA volunteer with Milne Bay's Division of Community Development Kento Mochizuki is heading the initiative to feature only one day on September 13th between 9am to 12noon.

Alotau Town will observe Independence celebrations beginning today [September 9th] to the 17th.
