Guterres pays tribute to PNG’s founding father

In a moment of profound international recognition, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today paid tribute to Papua New Guinea’s Founding Father and First Prime Minister, the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, during a commemorative visit to Wewak.

Accompanied by Prime Minister James Marape, His Excellency Guterres arrived in Sir Michael’s hometown on the eve of PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary, underscoring the global significance of the nation’s milestone and the enduring legacy of its founding statesman.

Guterres praised Sir Michael’s contributions to international diplomacy, particularly his advocacy for climate action and sustainable development.

He highlighted Sir Michael’s role in shaping global environmental policy, noting his influence in the adoption of Articles 5 and 6 of the Paris Agreement, which address carbon emission reduction and cooperative approaches to climate solutions.

“As UN Secretary General, I am not only paying tribute to a leader of a nation but a distinguished citizen of the world who has contributed to the rest of our planet,” Guterres said,

The Secretary-General’s remarks were delivered during a solemn wreath-laying ceremony, attended by dignitaries, community leaders, and members of the Somare family.
