UN Chief commends PNG’s unity on 50th Anniversary, promises to amplify pacific voices

United Nations [UN] Secretary-General António Guterres lauded Papua New Guinea's 50-year journey of forging national unity from profound diversity, highlighting the nation's story as proof that differences can be a greatest strength.
In a speech this morning in Parliament, Guterres noted that as the United Nations celebrates its 80th anniversary, it is looking to the future through its "UN80" process, an effort to strengthen the organization for the challenges of the 21st century.
A central part of that vision, he stressed, is elevating the role of Pacific nations on the world stage.
"An essential part of that is ensuring that the voices of the Pacific are heard loud and clear, throughout the multilateral system," Guterres said.
He acknowledged the immense task Papua New Guinea has undertaken since its independence, describing the path to nationhood as one "with peaks and valleys, like the Highlands themselves," which has demanded both courage and vision.
"Your story is proof that, when embraced with shared purpose and respect, our differences can be our greatest strength.
"The United Nations is proud to accompany you on every step," he stated.
The Secretary-General concluded with a culturally resonant appeal in Tok Pisin, directly addressing the people of Papua New Guinea.
"Wantoks, let’s keep talking for your people. For our planet. And for our shared future."
