United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres commended both Papua New Guinea and Bougainville for their ongoing efforts in the Bougainville Peace Agreement process,

During his address to Papua New Guinea’s National Parliament today, Guterres said last Saturday marked the 24th anniversary of the Bougainville Peace Agreement, pointing that the conflict had left deep scars.

“But for more than two decades, Papua New Guinea and Bougainville have stayed the course of peace,” he said.

“You have shown the world the path of healing through dialogue, perseverance, and mutual respect. The Melanesian Agreement signed in June exemplifies both parties’ willingness to engage in difficult conversations, and the United Nations has been honored to be a part of this process.”

Guterres also acknowledged the UN’s support through its Peacebuilding Fund, which has assisted with weapons disposal, the 2019 referendum, and the work of the independent moderator, in close partnership with the governments of Bougainville and Papua New Guinea.

He said UN’s collaboration with women, youth, and civil society throughout Bougainville was vital as the ongoing dialogue offers a model for other countries.

“The continued dialogue offers a model to other countries, and I am confident that the next phase will deliver a lasting resolution to the mutual benefit of all,” Guterres said.
