The police chief for the Northern Command has issued a strict warning to the public against the use of firecrackers and other dangerous contraband during Papua New Guinea’s 50th Golden Jubilee Independence celebrations.

Assistant Police Commissioner [ACP] Peter Guinness made the warning after Madang police confiscated a large shipment of illegal firecrackers at the town’s main wharf. The contraband is believed to have been brought in from the PNG-Indonesian border through Vanimo.

“Police will destroy any such items found in anyone’s possession, and those responsible will be arrested,” ACP Guinness said.

He said while people may be tempted to use firecrackers to celebrate Independence Day, such activity is illegal and poses a serious risk to life and property. “Safety must come first,” he said.

ACP Guinness also called on parents, community leaders, and shop owners to prevent minors from accessing these dangerous items and to report any illegal sales immediately.

“The police are taking this tough stance to ensure public safety. It is our duty to protect the community, lives, and properties, and we will make sure illegal items do not infiltrate villages,” he said.

The Northern Command continues to closely monitor the situation across the region in the lead-up to the nation’s milestone celebrations, reinforcing that law enforcement will not tolerate violations.
