The Goroka District Development Authority, led by Goroka MP Aiye Tambua, has strengthened public safety and traffic management in Goroka by donating a vehicle to the Police Traffic Unit on Friday at the Goroka Police Station.

MP Tambua said the traffic unit had been without a vehicle for six years, limiting its ability to address traffic congestion, unregistered vehicles, and the growing number of taxis and town buses on Goroka’s streets. “This donation is part of GDDA’s plan to improve road safety and ensure traffic law enforcement is effective,” he said.

In addition, GDDA contributed K80,000 to support police operations during Goroka’s 50th anniversary celebrations, further enhancing the force’s capacity to maintain law and order.

Eastern Highlands Provincial Police Commander [PPC] Chief Superintendent John Kale commended the MP and GDDA for recognizing the needs of government agencies in the district. “MP Tambua has provided critical support to the police, including vehicles, accommodation for new passouts, and infrastructure projects such as the 40-man single quarters at Minogore Barracks,” he said.

PPC Kale said the vehicle will be crucial for the traffic unit to address congestion, enforce road rules, and respond quickly to incidents in the busy town. He urged officers to use the vehicle responsibly. “Any misuse will be dealt with directly and swiftly,” he said.

With this donation, the GDDA’s support is set to enhance road safety, improve traffic management, and empower police to better serve the people of Goroka, marking a significant step toward safer streets for residents and commuters.
