A large crowd gathered at Magarima Station on Friday to witness the arrival of 10 prefabricated police houses, marking the final installment of the Hela Provincial Government’s program to construct 100 police houses this year. The broader program aims to deliver 500 houses across the province.

Project Coordinator Amos Libe confirmed that other districts have already received their allocations. In Tari Pori District, about 40 houses have been built at Pai and Enopi Barracks, while Komo and Wabia in Komo Hulia District have each received 10 houses. Last month, 10 houses were delivered to Koroba in Koroba Kopiago District. The remaining 20 houses will complete this year’s target.

“With Magarima now receiving its share, the housing rollout is nearing completion,” Libe said. He added that once offloaded, the District Development Authorities [DDAs] will oversee construction, including selecting suitable locations and supporting contractors.

Hela Provincial Police Commander, Superintendent Michael Welly, praised the provincial government for spearheading the initiative. “These houses are intended for police officers stationed in the province, and we are committed to ensuring construction proceeds smoothly,” he said.

Supt. Welly reiterated the importance of community cooperation, stating, “Collaboration among all stakeholders is essential to the success of this project.” He revealed that 518 police positions have now been officially approved under the Hela police structure, a major step toward strengthening law enforcement capacity.

“The provincial government is addressing the critical need for police accommodation, and local communities must take ownership and actively support this initiative,” Supt. Welly added, saying that improved police infrastructure will benefit the entire province.
