Kikori has stamped its authority on the Southern Region Basketball Tournament, overcoming both rivals and a grueling journey to claim the championship on Sunday.

In a thrilling grand final, Kikori 1 beat Kikori 2, 79-66, capping off a week of dominance that also saw them secure the basketball 3x3 titles in all divisions: premier men, women, and under-23 men.

The team’s success is even more remarkable considering the arduous journey from Kikori where players traveled by dinghies to Kerema and then along the Port Moresby–Alotau highway to reach the tournament.

“It was a long journey, but this victory is incredibly sweet for us,” Kikori team anager Gibson Maikai said, indicating the resilience and determination of the players.

Hosts Alotau 1 secured a win in the women’s division, defeating Kerema 51-42, adding some home pride to the event.

Basketball Federation of PNG official Jordan Sere applauded the tournament’s organizers, speaking of the vibrant atmosphere created for young athletes.

“This tournament is about giving young basketballers a platform to thrive, and Alotau did a fantastic job,” he said.

Tournament Director Kathy Areae thanked all participating teams and declared the event officially closed, praising the commitment and spirit of the players.

The 2025 Southern Region Basketball Tournament has not only crowned champions but also showcased the talent, perseverance, and sportsmanship of grassroots players across the region, setting the stage for future competitions.
