Training for 262 police reservists in East New Britain Province has begun at the Gunan na Niuvia facility in Kokopo, with the eight-week program aiming to boost law and order across the province.

Program Coordinator and Provincial Law and Order Programs Officer, Romalus Tavui, said the initiative is designed to strengthen community safety while supporting the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary [RPNGC].

The reservists fall into three categories:

National Reservists – serving full-time alongside regular police officers.

Corporate Reservists – professionals such as doctors, former police, and retired officers providing specialist expertise.

Community Auxiliary Police [CAP] – respected community members stationed at Local Level Governments [LLGs] to maintain safety at the grassroots level.

Mr Tavui said the program is being funded by the East New Britain Provincial Government under a Memorandum of Understanding with the RPNGC, which also covers allowances for the reservists.

Training will combine classroom and practical sessions, with each group of four reservists supervised by a regular police officer. Graduates will be deployed to LLGs and districts, including identified hotspots such as Gelagela.

Mr Tavui added that the program will also act as a recruitment pool, with outstanding reservists eligible for full police training in future intakes.
