Contractors instructed to complete city-wide road maintenance by September 9

Road maintenance works across the National Capital District are expected to be completed by early September, ahead of Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence anniversary celebrations.
City Manager Ravu Frank said the National Capital District Commission [NCDC] is prioritizing the rehabilitation of major intersections and arterial routes, particularly four-lane roads that have deteriorated.
“The maintenance program is meant for certain sections of the four-lane roads that have failed. Pothole patching is no longer sustainable, so we have undertaken a major maintenance program,” Mr Frank said.
He confirmed contractors have been instructed to complete all works by September 9.
Mr Frank apologised to city residents for the ongoing traffic congestion and appealed for patience as the work continues.
“I’ve appealed to motorists to bear with us. Contractors are also working at night when traffic is low, so we can get most of the work done then,” he said.
He urged drivers to follow traffic management measures, road signs, and diversions in place at construction zones for their safety and that of road workers.
Mr Frank said the roadworks are part of preparations for the Independence celebrations, but will also deliver long-term improvements to safety and infrastructure across the capital.
