Police request Usino-Bundi by-election counting be moved to Madang Town

Madang police chief, Acting Superintendent Robert Baim has formally written to the PNG Electoral Commission requesting counting for the Usino/ Bundi by- by-election to be moved to Madang Town.
Baim, who is als the Elections Operations Commander for the Usino/ Bundi by-election, cited lack of proper electricity supply at Walium Station and the recent arrests of two candidates as the two priority reasons for his request.
Walium Station has been experiencing an ongoing electricity outage for seven months now, which will severely affect the counting process.
Also, last week's arrests of two candidates have heightened tensions and security concerns in the area.
Other issues of concern that PPC Baim has also raised include potential clashes between supporters of candidates during the counting, accommodation for foreign troops who will be assisting local police in providing security for counting, plus the need to have a neutral counting venue which is essential for maintaining impartiality and safety.
Acting Superintendent Baim stated that, "In light of the above issues, Madang Town offers an ideal, accessible and secure environment conducive to a smooth counting process. Considering these factors, I strongly recommend that the counting be moved to Madang Town to facilitate a safe, transparent, and efficient counting process."
The PNGEC is yet to respond to PPC Baim' s request.
Meanwhile, counting for the Usino-Bundi by-election is likely to commence next week.
