Marape highlights PNG-Japan ties at Osaka World Expo

Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister James Marape marked PNG’s National Day at the 2025 World Expo in Osaka today, celebrating over five decades of diplomatic ties with Japan and showcasing the country’s cultural and economic aspirations on the global stage.
Speaking at the National Day Grand Hall, Prime Minister Marape addressed a crowd of Japanese dignitaries, officials, and members of the public, following an opening by Japanese State Minister for Foreign Affairs Fujii Hisayuki and a rendition of both nations’ anthems by local school children.
Marape emphasized the significance of PNG’s presence at the expo, regarding Japan as a long-standing and valued partner.

“It is a profound honour for PNG to be part of this global stage where we not only celebrate human achievements in technological innovation but also foster collaboration for a better future,” he said.
Under the Expo 2025 theme, ‘Designing Future Society for Our Lives’, Marape said Papua New Guinea is using the opportunity to share its story, one of cultural richness, resilience, and ambition.
“Our National Pavilion reflects our commitment to shared opportunity and partnership grounded in the spirit of mutual respect and cooperation. It tells the story of a resilient people, a thriving natural environment, and an emerging economy poised to take its rightful place in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond,” he said.
Marape extended appreciation to Japan for its hospitality and leadership in hosting the global event, adding that the expo also coincides with a major milestone for PNG, the 50th anniversary of its independence and 50 years of bilateral relations with Japan.
The Prime Minister used the occasion to encourage investment, tourism, and deeper collaboration, highlighting PNG’s focus on sustainable development, green technology, and the growth of Special Economic Zones.

“Papua New Guinea is open for business, for tourism, for cultural exchange, and for meaningful partnerships in all possible areas that deliver sustainable development for all,” he said.
Following his address, Marape toured various national pavilions, including PNG’s own, located on Yumeshima Island. He is scheduled to attend a reception this evening before traveling to Tokyo tomorrow for official meetings with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
