UOG students lead clean-up campaign to promote hygiene in Banz

Tertiary students from the University of Goroka [UOG], originally from North Waghi District in Jiwaka, are using their semester break to advocate for public health, proper waste management, and a healthier lifestyle.
The students, under the banner of the North Waghi Students Union, launched a “Volunteer Clean-Up Campaign” in Banz Town aimed at improving sanitation and encouraging community responsibility.
Student leader David Barel told NBC News that the initiative is a community-driven effort involving students and residents in cleaning public spaces, markets, and communal areas throughout the township.
“Health and hygiene for urban town and public market is one of the vital health issues that should be considered every day.
“We are targeting at reducing health risks associated with unmanaged waste and spreading communicable disease like typhoid," Mr Barel said.
He added that the campaign promotes behavioral change through active community-student participation.
The students have called on the North Waghi District authorities and town management to support the initiative by establishing a long-term foundation for regular clean-up activities and environmental awareness in partnership with student groups.
Meanwhile, Mr Barel also expressed gratitude to the Jiwaka Provincial Government and Governor Simon T. Kaiwi for their continued support, particularly the school fee subsidy provided in the second semester.
