The Jonah Kautu Academy [JKA] is paving the way for Papua New Guinea’s aspiring rugby union players to pursue opportunities in Australia and beyond.

Since its establishment in mid-2024, the academy has already sent 13 players overseas, where they have signed four-year contracts with professional clubs.

Facilitator and former PNG Pukpuk player Joe Kautu said that while the academy is still in its early stages, it is already proving to be a valuable platform for local talent.

"Currently, only senior players are going down through the JKA program, but this will soon change to include younger players from the academy,” he said.

He said that JKA has established connections with five overseas-based rugby clubs, and discussions are underway to secure full-time scholarships for the younger players currently training in the academy.

At present, only senior players are being sent through the JKA program, but that’s about to change as they work on including younger academy members in future opportunities.

Now into its seventh week, the academy’s youth development program has attracted a strong turnout, with children aged 7 to 17 participating. The focus is on teaching the fundamentals of rugby union while nurturing a love for the sport.

Kautu said growing interest has led to participants being divided into two groups, allowing coaches to introduce the game in a fun, engaging, and age-appropriate manner.

Training sessions are held at selected schools during the week, and at Sir John Guise Stadium on weekends. The 10-week program, now entering its seventh weekend, also provides a chance for parents to witness their children’s development and help promote the initiative.

He said their goal is to build not only skilled rugby players but also confident, disciplined young individuals.
