The Black Bass made history on Saturday, clinching their first-ever Isuzu Women’s T20 Smash title with a hard-fought seven-run victory over the Mudmen in a thrilling final at Amini Park.

Under the leadership of first-time captain Henao Jean Thomas, the Black Bass capped off a strong tournament campaign, overcoming wet weather conditions and stiff competition to emerge as champions of Papua New Guinea’s premier women’s domestic T20 competition.

“We had a pretty good week. Despite the rain and the weather, we still managed to play our game,” Thomas said after the match.

“It’s exciting to see so many young girls putting in the effort and trying their best. I hope they’ve picked up new skills to help them grow as players.”

Thomas, who was captaining a side for the first time, expressed pride in her team’s all-around effort.

“Winning this trophy as a captain is a bonus. Our batters and bowlers really stepped up—I’m very proud of the team.”

The Black Bass posted 105 for 4 from their 20 overs, anchored by a composed 43 from Hollan Doriga and a crucial late 27-run came from Pauke Siaka. In response, the Mudmen managed 98 for 8, with Isabel Toua leading a spirited chase.

Siaka, named player of the match, delivered under pressure in the final over, defending ten runs by conceding only two and claiming a key wicket on the first ball.

The result also highlights the continued growth of women’s cricket in PNG. Thomas acknowledged the strong competition throughout the week and thanked those who made the tournament possible.

“A big thank you to Boroko Motors and Isuzu for their sponsorship, to Cricket PNG, and to all the players and teams who took part. Special thanks also to the grounds staff who worked tirelessly to prepare the pitch despite the rain.”

Thomas praised the player-coach Pauke Siaka for her leadership and guidance, noting that such tournaments are essential for player development across the country.

“This tournament is a great opportunity to practice and perform. For many young players, it’s an important step toward playing at a higher level.”

With this victory, the Black Bass join the Cassowaries (2023) and Mudmen (2024) as recent winners of the annual tournament, which continues to serve as a key platform for identifying future talent for PNG’s national teams.

Lakani Oala, Match Day Operations Manager for the Isuzu T20 Smash, emphasized the tournament’s role in talent development.

“This is Cricket PNG’s flagship competition. From here, we scout players for the Barramundis and Lewas. The final was a great showcase, but even the third-place playoff between the Mariners and Cassowaries is important, it’s where careers can begin,” Oala said.

He also encouraged fans to support the upcoming Isuzu Men’s T20 Smash, which begins Friday, May 9 at Amini Park and runs over two weeks. The men's tournament will serve as the selection ground for the next Barramundis tours.
