After an unsuccessful campaign in the International Cricket Council [ICC] East Asia Pacific Qualifiers in Japan recently, the PNG Under-19 men’s cricket team, [PNG Garamuts] have been urged to regroup and improve.

This challenge was given by the Senior Manager for Domestic Cricket Lakani Oala, when interviewed by this newsroom.

The Garamuts campaign in the qualifiers saw them losing two matches to Japan, winning one over Fiji and losing one to Fiji.

Oala said the results in Japan is a wake-up call for all of them in Cricket PNG, specifically the junior programs which the Garamuts are captured under.

“Normally we do not lose matches to countries like Japan and Fiji, but we lost and it is something we need to look into now,” Oala said.

“We will have to relook at our programs, especially our junior development programs and identify where we went wrong.”

Despite the outcome, Oala is confident that the Garamuts will improve.

“It’s not the end of the world, they will come back, and we will take to sit down properly and do better in the next tournament.

Meanwhile recent qualifiers saw Japan finish off unbeaten and secured a spot in the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup scheduled for Zimbabwe next year.
