The Queensland PNG Paia has officially named its Mixed Under-20s team to represent Papua New Guinea at the upcoming 2025 Asia Pacific Youth Touch Cup, scheduled to take place at Kayo Stadium in Redcliffe, Queensland from May 15 - 17.

Due to ongoing financial constraints, the Touch Football Papua New Guinea [TFPNG] executive committee earlier this year endorsed the Queensland-based development program to field a national representative side.

The decision was made during a special executive meeting as part of efforts to maintain PNG’s international presence and rebuild after a disappointing 2024 World Cup showing.

“The purpose of putting a PNG team forward is to maintain our international participation after the 2024 World Cup embarrassment and to build from there,” TFPNG President Steven Kuimp said.

Australia-based TFPNG director Kristy De La Cruz, who is overseeing preparations, praised the squad’s commitment and eagerness to learn.

“Training has been amazing so far. The kids have been nothing but respectful and have shown real enthusiasm to improve,” De La Cruz said.

“The team is excited for the challenge ahead. My message to the players is to persevere through challenges, play every game like a grand final, and focus on growth with each performance.”
She also urged the young athletes to wear the national colors with pride:

“It is an honor and a privilege to wear these colors. Be proud of your heritage and be proud to be Papua New Guinean. Represent your family and your country with pride.”

The PNG mixed U20s will begin their final training camp in the coming days, with the aim of fostering team chemistry and sharpening skills ahead of the three-day international tournament.
