Hundreds turn up to honor Sir J

Hundreds turned up this morning at the Kavieng stadium, New Ireland province, for the memorial service in honor of late Sir Julius Chan.

His casket was housed in a traditional set-up, in the centre of the stadium where day 2 of the Kavieng program was held.

An hour service was conducted by catholic priest Fr. Justin Aminio.

Tributes were made after the service.

Arthur Somare spoke at the memorial highlighting the important foundation work through the Constitution done by his late father, Grand Chief Sir Michael, late Sir Julius and Dr. John Momis.

He thanked New Irelanders for Sir Julius, not as a new Irelander but a Papua New Guinean.

In attendance was late Sir Julius family, Justice Minister Pila Ninigi, minister assisting the PM Rainbo Deputy Opposition Leader James Nomane and former Foreign Affairs Minister Rimbink Pato.

The memorial service will be followed by customary obligations from the various local level government councils, business communities and visiting provinces.

Sir Julius will overnight at the Government house tonight.
