Jiwaka Provincial Member Simon Kaiwi questioned Prime Minister James Marape on its preparations for the 2027 national elections.

"The Government must clarify to the people of PNG whether electronic voting will be implemented in 2027.

"If we are transitioning to electronic voting, are we prepared for it, with only two years left?” Mr. Kaiwi asked in Parliament on Tuesday.

In response, Prime Minister James Marape said that the government have allocated funding and support to the ministry responsible.

He explained that the Government is collaborating with the PNG Electoral Commission and other stakeholders to introduce electoral reforms.

"A committee is working on this. We are studying India’s approach, where over 800 million people vote in a single day, and results are available within 24 hours. We are examining how their system works to guide our own reforms," Mr. Marape said.

"The electronic voting system is a goal, we aim to achieve by 2027, If not by then, certainly by 2032.”

Marape further noted that if PNG cannot implement electronic voting by 2027, alternative measures like biometric or manual national IDs would be required for voter participation.
