Residents of Gerehu Stage 3B in the nation’s capital have raised grave concerns about an alleged “illegal storage and market” set up of vegetables next to their homes.

The portion of land, Section 420, Lot 3, marked as a “registered parcel” was converted into a temporary sweet potato and cabbage market following the aftermath of the January 10 riots, with assurance from city authorities that it would be closed by mid-year.

Its’ 10 months now, and many issues have been raised by residents living right next door to it who witness and have to live with this daily.

The people involved in the trade are alleged to be publicly consuming alcohol, breeding pigs, urinating in public, leaving behind unsanitary conditions, foul odor and unbearable noise.

Resident, Claude Laki told NBC News, the huge trucks which come to deliver the bags of vegetables, which are then bought and taken away by smaller vehicles are a cause for severe congestion of the roads daily:

Nichola Yavu also raised the issue of the foul odor from the produce market.

Another resident, Edward Krau reiterated similar issues especially security concerns with the increase in strangers, employed as carriers hanging near their homes:

Meantime, NCD Governor Powes Parkop earlier told this newsroom, he's instructed his market management team to shut down the market as residents had legitimate complaints about the operations of this market.
