PNG boxing prodigy John Ume lost his maiden Olympic Games debut to Cuba’s fighter Erislandy Alvarez Borges in an inspiring display of determination and resilience.
Match referee Pohan Muhammad stopped the fight in round 2 when Borges knocked down Ume in the 63.5kg division bout at the 2024 Paris Olympics last night.
The fight at North Paris Arena was Ume’s first ever Olympic appearance after he was awarded a late call to join Team PNG.
John received the call to join the team just seven days before his bout and it was obvious he was not fully prepared for a memorable fight which prematurely ended in despair.
“Despite not being in peak form due to the unexpected nature of his invitation, John answered the call with pride and courage,” Team PNG said of Ume’s inclusion following the withdrawal of a Solomon Islands fighter.
“John’s participation in the Olympics, despite the short notice, is a testament to his resilience and dedication.”
It was apparent, Ume had an impossible fight to conquer given his daunting opponent’s status who was a silver medalist in the 2023 World Championships with a seamless professional fight record, unbeaten.
The Cuban fighter qualified on merit through succeeding at the second World Qualifying Tournament in the 63.5kg weight class, showcased his class scoring 50 points across the panel.
The fight was justly contested in the opening round as Borges picked up perfect score while Ume collected 42 points from the five judges.
The PNG boxing champion was knocked down thrice in the fight and referee Muhammad stopped the match in the second round and awarded victory to Borges.
Despite the unfortunate result, Ume was upheld for valiantly showcasing the spirit and tenacity of Team PNG.
“John Ume’s participation in Paris 2024 has made his country proud. His ability to step up at the last minute and face a top-tier opponent highlights the spirit of perseverance and pride that defines PNG athletes.
“Team PNG stands proud of John’s remarkable effort and unwavering resilience on the Olympic stage.”
