Madang Province on China’s Silk Road

Madang Provincial Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding [MoU] on the establishment of the Silk Road Partnership with Pingtan Country of Fujian Province in the People’s Republic of China on Wednesday, in Port Moresby.

The MoU will promote mutual understanding and friendship, specifically Madang and Pingtan Provinces to jointly promote the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.

Deputy Director-General of Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone, He Jiemin highlighted that the MoU will create a platform for friendly exchanges and enhance cooperation… expected to include cooperation in the areas of tourism, infrastructure and fisheries, and more.  

 “Under tourism, the two regions can learn from each other’s experiences and practice in island tourism resource development, project planning and development.

 “Promote infrastructure cooperation to provide policy guidance and necessary assistance for each other’s enterprise undertaking relevant projects and protect their lawful rights and interests,” Mr. Jiemin said.

It is also anticipated to strengthen trade relationships by establishing mutual investment in line with the laws of both regions.

“We are also looking into promoting people-to-people exchange in terms of encouraging universities, vocational colleges [and] high schools of the two regions to establish relationships with their counterparts and establish communication programs,” Jiemin added.

Provincial Member of Madang Province, Ramsey Pariwa said Madang has a strong relationship with China “through projects like the Ramu Nickle Mine and other business activities Chinese community participate in the province and we are grateful for this MoU."
