Vehicles finally enter Honda Waripa Village in Mendi Munihu District

After enduring 45 years of isolation, the residents of Honda-Waripa in the Mendi Munihu District of Southern Highlands Province rejoiced as vehicles finally entered their villages.

This significant moment symbolized the end of their arduous journey to access basic government services, which previously required them to trek long distances.

Nelson Albert Mais, the electoral officer of Mendi Munihui District Development Authority [DDA], underscored the essential role of roads in transportation and regional economic prosperity.

"Improved road infrastructure not only enhances travel convenience but also facilitates mobility and accessibility to various destinations," Mr Mais said.

"It is transformative and historic for the community that had been marginalized for over four decades since Papua New Guinea gained independence in 1975".

He said that they had long been overlooked, living in what he called "total darkness" due to past governments neglect.

Highlighting the road's significance, Mr Mais emphasized its potential to fast-track agricultural activities, foster growth in small and medium-sized enterprises, and streamline access to essential government services.

"Enhancing road and bridge infrastructure ranks among the top priorities for the DDA," he said.

Mendi Open local MP Raphael Tonpi, mentioned that funding for the project was made possible through a collaboration between the DDA, provincial government, and the National Government under the National Works Public Investment Program.

He expressed that this initiative is a beacon of hope for the community, fulfilling their long-held aspiration for a road network.
