There is a growing concern over the increasing number of motor vehicle accidents on the four-lane freeway from Keltiga to Town, and further down to Tega and Dobel in Mt Hagen, Western Highlands Province.

Western Highlands Provincial Police Commander Chief Superintendent John Sagom says, these accidents are caused by various factors.

Superintendent Sagom highlighted that the primary reason for these accidents is the lack of knowledge of traffic rules among drivers, particularly driving under the influence of alcohol or not having the necessary driving skills.

He recommended the enforcement of the Motor Traffic Regulation, 1967 to empower the police and Highway patrol in combating these road offenses

“The negligent act of drivers leads to frequent road accidents that cause deaths of innocent lives.

“Penalty provisions should now be amended by relevant authorities so those responsible for careless driving should be held accountable by law,” Supt Sagom said.

PPC Sagom said this after a fatal road accident claimed three lives and causing severe injuries to several others

Meanwhile, the WHP Police Chief is urging the community to promptly report individuals who display irresponsible driving behavior on the road.

Passengers have been strongly advised to prioritize their safety by refraining from boarding Public Motor Vehicles [PMVs] or private vehicles operated by intoxicated drivers or individuals with a negligent attitude towards traffic regulations.
