Hundreds missing as rescue efforts get underway after a major landslide in Porgera Paiela District

At least 3 people are dead after a massive landslide hit Yambali village in Maip-Muli LLG of the Porgera Paela District in Enga Province early Friday morning.

The landslide also covered five vehicles and destroyed more than 150 houses and food gardens

Hundreds are missing.

The landslide completely blocked offf road access at Porgera Gold Mine.

Our journalist in Enga Emmanuel Eralia was on the ground at Yambali village in Maip-Muli LLG and witnessed the severity of the landslide that occurred around 3 o'clock early Friday morning.

He confirmed that apart from the three deaths so far, more than 500 others are missing. They are believed to be buried under the fallen rocks and debris.

Villagers and locals around the vicinity of the affected area are in complete shock. They've appealed to relevant authorities to immediately assist with food rations, drinking water and temporary shelter.

Meantime the death toll is expected to rise in the coming days as rescue efforts to recover bodies continue.

One of the 3 dead was a mother of 4 children.

People were in shock and could not reach their right frame of mind when NBC News visited them.

Kureng Ambol, the younger brother of the deceased woman was lost for words. He has appealed to the government, NGOs, and humanitarian agencies to step in and assist them as they need food, water, and temporary shelter.

One of the only drinking water sources has also been contaminated and locals fear that more damages will come their way.

More than 500 bodies are still trapped under the debris and locals are trying their best to have them retrieved for proper burials.
